| | | | | | Name | Age | Birth | Death | City | State/Prov | Country | | Speitel, Hans-Henning | 66 | 1937-03-23 | 2004-02-23 | Edinburgh | | Scotland | | Newspaper: Scotsman.com News | Born: Erfurt, Germany, 23 March, 1937. Died: Edinburgh, 23 February, 2004.
HANS-Henning Speitel came to Scotland from Germany in 1959 as a student. He stayed to become one of the
leading figures in the dialectology of Scots.
Hans followed a tradition. Dialectologists from the German-speaking world — such as Eugen Dieth, Rudolph Zai
and Paul Wettstein in the first half of the 20th century — saw Scots as a fascinating and "respectable" subject
for study. By contrast, most speakers had been educated to view their tongue as something to be ashamed of.
Improved attitudes are due in no small measure to scholars like Hans Speitel.
Hans was born in Erfurt, Germany, on 22 March, 1937, but spent his early childhood in Ilmenau, Thuringia. In
1947 his family fled west to settle in Lage/Lippe in North Rhine Westphalia. Ilmenau kept a place in Hans’s heart
and after reunification he made several trips to visit childhood haunts.
Speitel had studied at the universities of Kiel and Frankfurt before coming to Edinburgh. In 1959-60 he
carried out his first fieldwork for the Linguistic Survey of Scotland (Scots Section) in the Borders and
Aberdeenshire.
Back in Frankfurt, one of his teachers proposed "English as spoken in Edinburgh" as the topic for his doctoral
dissertation. As preparation, Hans returned to Edinburgh in 1961 to study for the Diploma in Phonetics. He also
worked part-time in the survey, helping to edit the lexical collections. In 1964 he joined the full-time staff.
Speitel recognised that he needed to know more about the historical dialect of Edinburgh and its hinterland. In
1966-8 he undertook a PhD thesis in Edinburgh on "Some Studies in the Dialect of Midlothian and Edinburgh",
drawing data from speakers in Newhaven, Fisherrow and Stow.
Edinburgh had become home for Speitel and his first wife, Inge. There their twin daughters were born, raised
and educated. He participated actively in the city’s German community through the German Church and the German
Circle. And there was the important afternoon ritual of Kaffeetrinken und Kuchen to maintain. But the cultured
German also became a cultured Scot: a border ran through Speitel and he criss-crossed it easily. Indeed, borders
became a theme in his work. He investigated the distribution of lexis around the Scottish Border and used survey
materials for a linguistic study of the "Highland Line", where he sought to define the northern and western
boundaries of "core" Scots.
His writings reveal a meticulous, widely read and deeply thoughtful scholar. His methodological approach was
traditional, yet his thinking always had a sharp innovative edge. His most significant achievement was the
Linguistic Atlas of Scotland (LAS), which records the words and sounds of Scots current in the first half of the
20th century. The two word-geography volumes were published in 1975 and 1977; the phonology volume appeared in
1986. Speitel’s written output is not great in quantity, but the LAS might be considered a fine enough
achievement. Preparation of the LAS was a collaborative work with James Mather (who also carried out most of the
fieldwork for the phonological survey) and George Leslie, the survey’s cartographer. In the phonological volume,
Speitel and Mather maintained the structuralist approach of the original questionnaire, devised in the 1950s.
Indeed, their innovative systemic arrangement of the materials pushed the boundaries of structuralism, though it
made the volume less approachable for a non-specialist readership.
Speitel contributed to teaching in the School of Scottish Studies and supervised PhD and postdoctoral
research, including studies of the Borders counties and a major sociolinguistic survey of speech in Morningside.
His cultural interests were wide: especially literature (Goethe, with Ilmenau associations, was a favourite) and
music (his great passion was the works of JS Bach). He also became a considerable scholar of Scottish culture. A
paper on the etymology of the Newhaven fishwives’ cry of "caller-ou" nicely brought together his dialectological
knowledge and his reading of cultural history.
In the early 1980s Speitel was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The years thereafter were a wearing
struggle. At first he continued to work. However, the effects of the MS became more apparent and eventually, even
climbing the one flight of stairs to his office became too much. Reluctantly he yielded to early retirement.
Better fortune came to Speitel in his latter years. After the break-up of his first marriage, he found a new
partner in Pauline Cairns. They married in 1998. Although life became increasingly more circumscribed, friends
and old colleagues maintained contact. His daughters, now living abroad, visited when they could and Inge kept in
close touch. A great sadness in his last years was his limited ability to enjoy his grandchildren.
Hans fought MS every inch, supported by Pauline, her family and numerous nurses and helpers. Sometimes he
seemed to believe that he could actually overcome the disease. Inevitably it won.
He is survived by his wife, sister, two daughters and three grandchildren.

| | | | Name | Age | Birth | Death | City | State/Prov | Country | | Speidel, Charles Merritt | 56 | 1947-12-05 | 2004-01-26 | Visalia | California | US | | Newspaper: Visalia Times-Delta | Charles Merritt Speidel went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Jan. 26, 2004. He was 56.
"Charlie" was born to Robert and Kathryn Speidel on Dec. 5, 1947, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He moved to Visalia when he was 1 year old, and grew up and lived most of his life in Visalia. He graduated from Mt. Whitney High School in 1966, where he lettered in track. He attended College of the Sequoias in 1966 and 1967, and later attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where he was a business major. As a creative and industrious teenager, he became interested in real estate, commercial and residential land development, and home construction. In his late "teens" while attending COS, Charlie would split his study time with purchasing and "fixing-up" small, condemned houses for small profits. He developed a local reputation for being a hard worker with a "gift" for creative innovation and a desire for perfection in his building projects.
He once owned and developed an entire block in the city of Hanford and remodeled the old Wealth Center Building. It was there that he started a news and tobacco shop known as "Old Town News and Such." He would later purchase and remodel the abandoned Visalia Dairy to the north of the old Visalia train depot (now the Depot Restaurant), where his creation "Railway Shops" was born. Next came the development and conversion of the old Montgomery Wards farm store building on Center Street where the Visalia Toy Store became a longtime tenant. After this, he purchased an old store on Main Street and renovated it into his second news and gift store calling it "Old Town Gifts." As was Charlie's custom, this store catered to kids and adults of all ages. It was always important to Charlie to reach a broad range of people.
By the early 1970s Charlie became interested in basic residential development and home construction. He formed a partnership with Don Fulbright to create "Old Town Builders," which developed and constructed tract housing projects.
In the mid to late 1970s Charlie and his brother, Rob, both earned their General Contractors Licenses. Charlie took his license and started his own company called "Speidel Incorporated," purchased commercial buildings, and used his instinctive and creative flair to remodel them. His architectural "touches" were described as "unique" and "of superior quality and design." He loved the Victorian architectural style, and incorporated it into many of his projects.
It was during this time period that Charlie took on miscellaneous construction adventures and developed more elaborate and extensive land development projects. Some of these included the development and construction of a first class apartment complex on Tulare Avenue east of Santa Fe Street, and meticulously designed and constructed custom residential homes.
Though Charlie's creative talent and projects were distinctive and successful, he opted out of the construction industry in the mid 1980s. Interest rates were high, and his interests shifted to inventions and managing commercial properties.
His life changed dramatically after marrying Linda Raines in 1978. When he surrendered his life and will to Jesus Christ, became a member of the Visalia Evangelical Free Church, and became the proud father of two children, Sarah Kathryn (23) and Zachary Merritt (20) Speidel.
He joined Grace Community Church of Visalia in the mid 1990s where he taught Sunday School for nearly nine years to elementary school students. He always challenged the children with real life issues, and creative problem solving for the younger crowd facing an uncertain world. He spent many hours preparing fun projects for his Sunday school kids, and inspired many with his down-to-earth wisdom. His goal was to inspire each child's life by injecting moral clarity and supporting it with Biblical principles. He will be greatly missed by the children he had the privilege to teach as well as the church body.
Charlie had a love for life that can be described as motivational, passionate, loving, caring and giving. He had an incredibly funny sense of humor that will be remembered by all who knew him. His practical jokes were hysterical and historic. He always reached out to those who needed attention, and made time for anyone who needed an ear to listen.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert M. Speidel in 1966, who was the former owner and publisher of Speidel Newspaper of Visalia. He is survived by his two children, Sarah and Zachary Speidel of Visalia, and an older sister, Mrs. Meredith Walter of Portland, Ore.; two younger brothers, Robert M. Speidel Jr., and John M. Speidel, both of Visalia. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Kathryn (Speidel) Crookshanks and stepfather, Dr. Ivan C. Crookshanks, both of Visalia.
Although Charlie was taken suddenly, we know he is in a much better place now. He will be greatly missed by his family and those he touched with his sincere and unselfish grace. The Celebration of Life Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Grace Community Church, 424 N. Lovers Lane in Visalia. Remembrances may be made to the Grace Community Church Children's Ministry, 424 N. Lovers Lane, Visalia, CA 93292. Arrangements are by Miller Memorial Chapel, Visalia.

| | | | Name | Age | Birth | Death | City | State/Prov | Country | | Spidel, John | 64 | 1833-05-10 | 1897-09-10 | Gettysburg | Ohio | US | | Newspaper: 1st: The Gospel Messenger, 2nd: ? | SPIDEL and TRACY - In the Oakland church, Darke Co., Ohio, Sept. 10, 1897, John Spidel, aged 64 years and 4 months, and Willie Tracy, his nephew, aged about 15 years.
They were starting home from Gettysburg (OH), where they had been hauling grain. Just as they were in the act of crossing the Pan Handle R. R., they were run over by the fast mail train, which killed both of them instantly.
In 1858 Mr. Spidel was married to Margaret Marker who, for many years past, has been a member of the Brethren church. Seven children blessed this union, two of them having preceded him.
The younger son, David, died July 2, 1888, from injuries received by his team running away from an approaching train, two weeks before.
Very singularly, Mr. Spidel's father, bearing the same name as his younger son, was instantly killed by a runaway thirty-four years ago. Thus representatives of three generations, - son, father and grandfather, - have all been taken away in a similar manner, so unexpectedly and so sudden.
Willie Tracy was the youngest son of George W. and Barbara Tracy, the latter a daughter of Henry Kuns, of Cerrogordo, Ill. His mother died while he was yet an infant. For several years he had been living with his Uncle John Spidel. He leaves a father and two brothers.
Two funerals, - two hearses each carrying a member of the same family, at the same time, - rendered the occasion a sad one. Funeral services were conducted by brethren Stutsman, Kreider, and Christian at the Presbyterian church in Gettysburg. Levi Minnick.
********************
The funeral of John Spidel and adopted son, Willie Tracy, notice of whose tragic deaths occurring at Gettysburg (OH) last friday afternoon will be found on the first page of this paper, was held from the Gettysburg, Presbyterian church, Monday, 2 p.m., Sept. 13, conducted by Revs. Kreider, Stutzman and Christian of the German Baptist church and the bodies were interred in the Gettysburg cemetery.
Mr. Spidel was born in Union county, Penna., May 10, 1833, and came with his parents to Ohio locating near Dayton, in 1836.
In 1850 he came to Darke county locating in the neighborhood in which he lived up to his death.
He was married to Margaret, the daughter of Jacob Marker, of Painter creek, April 4th, 1858.
Mr. Spidel in early life and up until a few years since was a carpenter and builder and although he had but a very limited education, yet his every venture was a success. In later years he gave his entire attention to farming, which with the co-operation of his industrious sons has yeilded him many broad acres. As a friend and advisor he was always reliable; as a citizen he commanded the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He lived not for himself alone - His house was the home of many and the latch-string was always out. He and his most estimable wife were never known to turn anyone away hungry or suffering for the necessaries of life.
While the deceased had never connected himself with any religious organization yet he was a regular attendant at divine worship with his wife who is an exemplary member of the German Baptist church and he always, contributed there to.
The immediate family consists of the widow who, broken hearted and lonely will live at the homestead with her son John W. and daughter Sarah who are both single; also sons Jacob C. and Daniel W. and daughter Delilah Gries who are married and live on farms near by.
Mr. Spidel has two brothers Samuel of Dayton, O, and Henry, a twin brother of Piedmont, Ind., and two sisters, Mrs. Mote, of Celina, O., and Mrs. Replogle, of Cerro Gordo, Ills.
It is a strange coincidence that Mr. Spidel's father was killed in 1863 at West Milton, O., by horse running away with him. His son David was badly injured June 15, 1888, at Bradford, Ohio, by team running away with him and died on July 2, following. Now the family chronicle two more deaths from nearly same cause.
Mr. Spidel had reached the age of 65 years and 4 months.
The little boy who shared the same fate with him was George William Tracey; he was 15 year 6 months and 29 days old at the time of his death; he had been living with the Spidel family for 8 years and was a good, obedient boy and a favorite with all who knew him. His mother who was a niece of Mr. Spidel died 8 years since in Illinois and his guardian Mr. F. A. Vaniman, of McPherson, Kan., placed him with his family for proper care and raising. He has two brothers, Henry and Urban Tracy who live in McPherson, Kansas; are in the employ of Mr. Vaniman who is Cashier of the Farmers & Merchants Bank, of that city. They are young men of attractive appearance and are certainly upright and correct to hold positions they do. These two brothers and the guardian attended the funeral.
The funeral was attended by over 1200 and was the largest in the history of this community.

Freda Laura Boyd, was born March 28, 1915 in Seattle, Wash., to Fred Boyd and Bertha Carey Kennedy.
Freda's early life was spent in Seattle where she attended elementary schools and graduated from Ballard
High School in 1932.
"Freda loved growing up near Puget Sound and the ocean. Love for her hometown of Seattle never left her,"
her family said.
She married John Clark (Bill) Brennan Aug. 28, 1932, of the same year. As a Navy Machinist, Bill served
aboard the U.S.S. Pillsbury during WWII, which was sunk with the loss of all hands during the Battle of the
Java Sea in February of 1942.
Freda worked to support the war effort as a riveter and as a welder for Ford Motor Company, making B-24s.
In an effort to earn better wages, she traveled from Detroit to Oak Ridge where she worked on the
Manhattan Project developing the world's first atomic bombs.
In 1944, Peggy enlisted in the Coast Guard, trained in Florida and served as a Yeoman First Class.

1970.
In the late '70s, Peggy moved to her Boise condominium home, enjoying friends and family in many
organizations including the Catholic Church, Nazareth Retreat Center, Happy Hoofers, Bridge Club and the
Ahavath Beth Israel Synagogue. Her grandchildren fondly remember the "condo" where they swam in her pool and
fed the ducks, enticing them indoors.
Her other joy was traveling, especially taking her family on trips.
"Peggy helped other people all her life in the churches and synagogues that she attended as well as
schools and the military," her family said with pride. "She even worked and ran a Boise soup kitchen. Peggy
often gave shelter or food to the homeless, exchange students and abused women. She often said,'Don't feel
sorry for yourself; do something for other people'."
In 2000, Peggy moved back to Mountain Home to be near her family, living at Cedar Crest Retirement
Center.
"She was a great-grandmother and grandmother to many and loved all her family dearly," her family
said.
